Las ostomías son procedimientos quirúrgicos por los que se aboca al exterior de la pared abdominal una parte del sistema digestivo o urinario, siendo la causa principal por la que se realiza el cáncer colorrectal.
Se encuentran tres tipos principales de ostomías; las colostomías, las ileostomías y las urostomías, cada una da lugar a un tipo de efluente y por lo tanto la necesidad de diferentes cuidados.
También es importante conocer que se pueden producir diferentes complicaciones, ya sea derivadas del estoma como las estenosis o los prolapsos o retracciones estomales que pueden precisar derivación, o complicaciones con la piel periestomal, como irritaciones, hernias o úlceras, siendo necesario el uso de accesorios.
Cada vez son más las personas ostomizadas, es por ello que se hace necesario conocer tanto sus cuidados como los dispositivos de los que se dispone y dotar de formación tanto al personal enfermero como a los pacientes para que aprendan a realizar sus autocuidados.
