La circulación extracorpórea es una técnica utilizada en todas aquellas operaciones que requieren de una observación directa del corazón o que obligan a interrumpir sus latidos, es decir, es un circuito que sustituye las funciones del corazón y del pulmón, desviando temporalmente la sangre de estos. Sus equipos son complejos, por eso, a la hora de montarlos debe haber dos enfermeros/as perfusionistas, uno encargado del montaje y otro encargado de revisar y validar. Los riesgos de la circulación extracorpórea surgen a raíz de la hemodinamia, por ser un medio artificial para conservar la circulación. Por tanto, a mayor duración de empleo, mayor será la posibilidad de aparición de complicaciones.
