INTRODUCCIÓN: La atención sanitaria en prisiones ha evolucionado al mismo tiempo que la Atención Primaria de Salud Española, pero esto no ha impedido que la Sanidad Penitenciaria (SP) quede relegada a un segundo plano con respecto al sistema sanitario público. La Enfermería Penitenciaria (EP), pese a ser un colectivo numeroso, cuenta con escaso reconocimiento. Sin embargo, son muchas las funciones que deben asumir. Se trata de una profesión compleja, un compendio de salud pública y comunitaria, salud ocupacional, urgencias, atención ambulatoria, docencia y gestora.
OBJETIVOS: Describir la realidad de la atención prestada por los profesionales de Enfermería Penitenciaria.
METODOLOGÍA: Una revisión bibliográfica acerca de la Enfermería Penitenciaria y la actual situación de la Sanidad Penitenciaria en España utilizando las bases de datos y metabuscadores PubMed, Scielo, IBECs, Elsevier, Google Académico, Cuiden y Biblioteca Virtual en Salud.
CONCLUSIONES: El equipo de EP precisa una formación específica y continua que debe reforzarse y actualizarse. Se hace evidente la necesidad de conocer el papel de la enfermería en este ámbito, con el fin de lograr una mejor calidad asistencial y la propia satisfacción laboral del personal sanitario. Por otro lado, la falta de contenidos específicos en la titulación del Grado de enfermería conlleva que el contexto educativo no esté trasladado al mundo laboral y aún menos al de las Instituciones Penitenciarias.
INTRODUCTION: Prison health care has evolved at the same time as Spanish Primary Health Care, but this has not prevented Prison Health Care from being relegated to the background with respect to the public health system. Prison Nursing, despite being a large group, has little recognition. However, they have many functions to perform. It is a complex profession, a compendium of public and community health, occupational health, emergency, outpatient care, teaching and management.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the reality of the care provided by prison nursing professionals.
METHODOLOGY: A bibliographic review on Prison Nursing and the current situation of Prison Healthcare in Spain using the databases and meta search engines PubMed, Scielo, IBECs, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Cuiden and Virtual Health Library.
CONCLUSIONS: The prison nursing team requires specific and continuous training that needs to be reinforced and updated. There is a clear need to understand the role of nursing in this field, in order to achieve better quality care and the job satisfaction of healthcare staff. On the other hand, the lack of specific content in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing means that the educational context is not transferred to the world of work and even less so to the world of penitentiary institutions.
