La artritis reumatoide es la inflamación de las articulaciones, que se define como la estructura anatómica que permite la unión entre dos huesos o entre hueso y cartílago.
Los ligamentos, unen los extremos óseos y proporcionan estabilidad, y los músculos proporcionan movilidad a la articulación.
Afecta al revestimiento de la articulación, y se caracteriza por dolor, hinchazón y sensación de entumecimiento o rigidez. Con el tiempo puede producir deformidad erosión ósea y deformidad.
Los síntomas pueden permanecer sólo unos días o semanas, tratarse de artritis aguda, o bien, durar meses o años, y en ese caso hablamos de artritis crónica.
En algunas personas, puede llegar a afectar otros tejidos, como son el pulmón, corazón y vasos sanguíneos.
