La meningitis es la inflamación del tejido que rodea tanto el cerebro como la médula espinal, llamado meninge. Esta inflamación va a provocar alteraciones del líquido cefalorraquídeo (LCR) y la aparición de unos signos y síntomas conocidos como síndrome meníngeo. Existen varios tipos de meningitis, según su duración (agudas, subagudas, crónicas y recurrentes) y según su etiología (infecciosas o no infecciosas). Dentro de las infecciosas destacan las meningitis bacterianas, siendo uno de los problemas de salud pública más importantes del mundo, y una de las 10 principales causas de muerte por enfermedades infecciosas.
