La encefalopatía hepática es un deterioro de la función cerebral causado por una enfermedad hepática grave. Cuando el hígado es incapaz de eliminar ciertas sustancias tóxicas que se encuentran en nuestro organismo, estas sustancias se acumulan en la sangre y pueden viajar hasta el cerebro produciendo una encefalopatía. La principal neurotoxina que se acumula en la sangre es el amonio. El amonio es una sustancia de desecho producida por las bacterias del colón que en condiciones normales es eliminado por el hígado.
Esta condición se manifiesta por síntomas neuropsiquiátricos que afectan a la neurotransmisión y que afectan a la calidad de vida del paciente.
Hepatic encephalopathy is a deterioration in brain function caused by severe liver disease.
