  La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) es una enfermedad que afecta a gran parte de la población. Los último datos registrados por la Organización Mundial de la Salud sobre la mortalidad y prevalencia de EPOC registran que es la tercera causa de muerte a nivel mundial, por detrás de la cardiopatía isquémica y los accidentes cerebrovasculares.

  Es una afección causada por lesiones en las vías respiratorias u otras partes del pulmón que obstruyen el paso del aire y dificultan la respiración. Sus síntomas surgen lentamente, pero empeoran con el tiempo hasta llegar a situaciones crónicas e irreversibles, que impiden al paciente llevar a cabo sus actividades básicas de vida diaria (ABVD).

  Actualmente la principal causa de EPOC es la larga y continua exposición al humo del tabaco, aunque la exposición a otros irritantes inhalados puede contribuir a la enfermedad. Estos incluyen humo de segunda mano, contaminación del aire y humos o polvos químicos del ambiente o del lugar de trabajo.

  Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease that affects a large part of the population. The latest data recorded by the World Health Organization on the mortality and prevalence of COPD show that it is the fourth cause of death worldwide, behind ischemic heart disease and stroke.

  It is a condition caused by injuries to the airways or other parts of the lung that obstruct the passage of air and make breathing difficult. Its symptoms emerge slowly, but worsen over time until they reach chronic and irreversible situations, which prevent the patient from carrying out their basic activities of daily living (BADL).

  Currently the main cause of COPD is long and continuous exposure to tobacco smoke, although exposure to other inhaled irritants can contribute to the disease. These include secondhand smoke, air pollution, and chemical fumes or dust from the environment or workplace.
