La retención aguda de orina es una de las urgencias urológicas más comunes en el ámbito hospitalario. Se trata de aquella situación que impide la eliminación de orina de manera voluntaria. Suelen acudir con molestias abdominales bajas, distensión abdominal e incapacidad para poder orinar. Es importante descubrir la causa por la que se origina esta situación que suelen ser causas obstructivas, farmacológicas, infecciosas o neurológicas.
El tratamiento consiste en la colocación de una sonda o catéter vesical de manera intermitente o permanente según cual sea el origen. Puede ser de acceso suprapúbico o transuretral. Si se trata de un sondaje vesical es realizada por el personal de enfermería y el auxiliar de enfermería.
