Introducción: En este estudio se intentó determinar el estado de fatiga por compasión del personal sanitario que participó en operaciones de búsqueda y rescate en zonas de catástrofe, que es un entorno altamente traumatizante. Para ello, se entrevistó a 12 miembros del personal sanitario que habían participado en una catástrofe grave en el último año.
Métodos: Para el análisis de las entrevistas se utilizó el programa Maxqda 24. Se identificaron cuatro temas en el ámbito de los análisis. Estos temas son los efectos del desastre, los factores que afectan a la fatiga por compasión, los métodos para hacer frente a la fatiga por compasión y las expectativas institucionales para reducir la fatiga por compasión.
Resultados: Como resultado de la investigación, se determinó que la fatiga por compasión de los participantes se encontraba en un nivel moderado. Se determinó que las catástrofes afectan al personal sanitario que participa en actividades de búsqueda y rescate desde el punto de vista fisiológico, psicológico, emocional, profesional y social. Aunque se determinaron muchos factores que aumentan la fatiga por compasión, se concluyó que también hay factores que tienen un efecto decreciente. Se entendió que el factor más mencionado por los participantes para hacer frente a la fatiga por compasión era participar en actividades sociales.
Conclusiones: La fatiga por compasión de los participantes no fue tan alta como se esperaba. Se vio que había factores que aumentaban la fatiga por compasión de los participantes, así como factores que la disminuían. Se aceptó que esta situación podía haber creado un equilibrio.
Introduction: This study aimed to determine the compassion fatigue status of healthcare personnel who participated in search and rescue operations in disaster areas, which is a highly traumatizing environment. For this purpose, 12 health personnel who took part in a major disaster in the last year were interviewed.
Methods: Maxqda 24 program was used in the analysis of the interviews. Four themes were identified within the scope of the analyzes. These themes are the effects of the disaster, factors affecting compassion fatigue, methods of coping with compassion fatigue and institutional expectations for reducing compassion fatigue.
Results: As a result of the research, compassion fatigue of the participants was found to be at a moderate level. It was determined that disasters affect health personnel participating in search and rescue activities physiologically, psychologically, emotionally, professionally and socially. Although many factors that increase compassion fatigue were identified, it was concluded that there are also factors that have a decreasing effect. It was understood that the most frequently mentioned factor by the participants to cope with compassion fatigue was to engage in social activities.
Conclusions: Participants’ compassion fatigue was not found to be as high as expected. It was observed that the participants had elements that decreased compassion fatigue as well as elements that increased it. It was acknowledged that this situation may have created a balance.
