La hemoptisis es la expectoración subglótica de sangre procedente del árbol traqueobronquial. Existen varias causas, siendo las más frecuentes el carcinoma broncogénico, la bronquitis crónica y las bronquiectasias. Se puede clasificar según la cantidad de sangrado, siendo la hemoptisis masiva la más grave, considerándose una urgencia médica que puede provocar la asfixia del paciente, y que precisa de ingreso hospitalario para su tratamiento. Existen varias medidas generales y recomendaciones para llevar a cabo ante cualquier tipo de hemoptisis.

It can be classified according to the amount of bleeding, with massive hemoptysis being the most serious, considered a medical emergency that can cause the patient to suffocate, and requires hospital admission for treatment.
