Registro epidemiológico de la insuficiencia respiratoria aguda en el servicio de urgencias del Hospital Universitario Arnau de Vilanova

    La insuficiencia respiratoria aguda (IRA) es una de las patologías más prevalentes en el servicio de urgencias. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar las características de los pacientes que consultaron en nuestro hospital por dicho motivo. Se presenta un registro de las características de todos los pacientes que consultaron por insuficiencia respiratoria aguda durante un periodo de tres años. La insuficiencia respiratoria aguda produce un gran número de ingresos hospitalarios, así como de reconsultas en el servicio de urgencias y un porcentaje nada desdeñable de muertes asociadas. Asimismo, existe un importante sobrediagnóstico de la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) sin pruebas diagnósticas que lo respalden, lo que debería llevarnos a realizarlas correctamente.

    Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is one of the most prevalent pathologies in the emergency department. The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the patients who consulted in our hospital for this reason. A registry of the characteristics of all patients who consulted for acute respiratory failure during a three-year period is presented. Acute respiratory failure causes a large number of hospital admissions as well as reconsultations in the emergency department and a not inconsiderable percentage of associated deaths. Likewise, there is a significant overdiagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) without supporting diagnostic tests, which should lead us to perform them correctly.
