Introducción: La resistencia a antibióticos es una de las mayores amenazas sobre la salud. Esta resistencia causa aumento de los costes sanitarios y mortalidad. En inglés existe el concepto “Antimicrobial stewardship”.
Objetivo: Revisar los estudios e información previos sobre la eficacia/utilidad de los antibióticos y antisépticos tópicos en heridas agudas y crónicas.
Resultados: En los documentos técnicos de la GNEAUPP encontramos recomendaciones para heridas crónicas y heridas agudas como no emplear antisépticos de manera rutinaria en el lavado de las lesiones o no aplicar antibiótico tópico en la herida quirúrgica con el fin de prevenir la infección. Por otro lado, otros autores muestran comparaciones en el uso de antibiótico tópico frente a placebos.
Conclusión: Los antibióticos y antisépticos tópicos no deben usarse de manera rutinaria para la prevención de infecciones ya que fomentan las resistencias a los antibióticos.
Introduction: Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to health. This resistance causes increased health costs and mortality. In English there is the concept “Antimicrobial stewardship”.
Objective: To review previous studies and information on the efficacy/utility of topical antibiotics and antiseptics in acute and chronic wounds.
Results: In the technical documents of the GNEAUPP we find recommendations for chronic wounds and acute wounds such as not routinely using antiseptics to wash the lesions or not applying a topical antibiotic to the surgical wound in order to prevent infection. On the other hand, other authors show comparisons in the use of topical antibiotics versus placebos.
Conclusion: Topical antibiotics and antiseptics should not be used routinely for infection prevention as they promote antibiotic resistance.
