Los alimentos de modificación genética (GM) o ingeniería genética o tecnología recombinante de ADN1. Es el procedimiento de manipular y modificarlos utilizando genes de otras plantas y animales. Los científicos eligen el gen específico de una planta o animal y lo insertan dentro de la célula de otra planta o animal el cual será modificado. Pueden ser de origen animal vegetal o fermentados.
Esta tecnología avanza para ser incluida en el mercado a nivel mundial. En España actualmente sólo están en proceso de comercialización el tomate, la soja y el maíz.
Destacar que entre sus objetivos principales y en un futuro no muy lejano será posible proporcionar alimentos de manera efectiva y manteniendo la biodiversidad de manera sostenible.
