A hip arthroplasty involves replacing all or part of the hip joint with an artificial joint. This procedure can be performed both to recover the joint after a fracture and to relieve arthritis, although there may be some other reason that the doctor considers important to perform it.
The new hip will typically consist of a metal stem that will fit into the ball of the femur, a metal ball, a cup, and a liner that has to fit inside the cup to allow movement of the hip.
Usually in this type of intervention it is common for a lot of blood to be lost, so you have to be prepared and know the patient’s blood group to, if necessary, transfuse blood.
The results of hip replacement surgery are usually excellent, and most or all pain and stiffness should go away.
