The lumbar puncture (LP) technique consists of the introduction of a needle into the subarachnoid space of the spinal column, at the level of the lumbar region, normally in spaces L3-L4, L4-L5. The performance may be indicated for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

To perform the technique, it is necessary for the patient or legal representative to sign the informed consent after having been informed of the entire procedure.
The nursing staff should be in charge of informing the patient together with the doctor of the purpose, the technique and complications of the LP, labeling and listing the samples obtained, control of vital signs, assessment of the pre and post technique neurological status, pain and sensations During the procedure, record the procedure in the medical history, notify the doctor of complications in the short, medium or long term.
