La barrera idiomática en el quirófano: perfil de los pacientes

    Este trabajo presenta un estudio sobre la prevalencia de pacientes con barrera idiomática intervenidos en el quirófano del Hospital del Mar entre septiembre 2019 y febrero 2020, e identifica la necesidad o no de crear una herramienta para una comunicación eficaz con los pacientes. Se seleccionaron pacientes con barrera idiomática total o parcial intervenidos en el área y las especialidades quirúrgicas, utilizando el programa informático IMASIS, se identificaron el lugar de nacimiento, edad, género, especialidad quirúrgica y nivel de cirugía. La muestra de 278 pacientes extranjeros intervenidos quirúrgicamente, los cuales 184 (61,54%) con BI y 115 (38,46%) sin, confirmaron que hay un porcentaje significativo con barrera idiomática, los cuales, el mayor número procedían del Pakistán con 44 (25%) pacientes seguido de Marruecos con 28 (16%). En cuanto a la especialidad quirúrgica el mayor porcentaje eran de cirugía general y de urgencias. En el caso de las mujeres cobra especial importancia el porcentaje en ginecología- obstetricia urgente. Este estudio muestra una realidad en nuestro entorno quirúrgico, una prevalencia significativa de los pacientes que se atienden en el quirófano tiene barrera idiomática. Conocer el perfil del paciente que se interviene quirúrgicamente es fundamental para poder llevar a cabo estrategias de mejora, facilitar la comunicación y minimizar las barreras lingüísticas para así garantizar la seguridad en el quirófano. Esto nos lleva a la necesidad de crear un instrumento eficaz para favorecer la comunicación y realizar una valoración inicial.

    This research shows a study on the prevalence of patients with a language barrier operated on in the operating room of the Hospital del Mar between September 2019 and February 2020. The main purpose is to identify the needs and to create a tool for their effective communication with the surgery team. Patients with a total or partial language barrier who has been operated in the surgical area were language barrier who has been operated in the surgical area were selected by a statistic made with a computer program called IMASIS.

    From this informatic system is possible to identify their place of birth, age, gender, surgical specialty and level of surgery. The sample of 278 foreign patients who underwent surgery, of which 184 (61.54%) with BI and 115 (38.46%) without it, confirmed that there is a significant percentage with language barrier, of which the largest number came from Pakistan with 44 (25%) patients followed by Morocco’s ones with 28 (16%). Regarding the surgical specialty, the highest percentage were general surgery and emergency. In case of women, the percentage in urgent gynecology-obstetrics is really important. This study shows a reality in our surgical environment: a significant prevalence of patients treated in the operating room have language barrier.
