INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is defined as a respiratory disease characterized by chronic airflow limitation that is poorly reversible and associated with tobacco smoke.
It is a disease with high morbimortality, which implies a public health problem of great magnitude, being the respiratory problem with the highest prevalence and socioeconomic impact in the world despite being a preventable disease.
OBJECTIVES: To expose the importance of good adherence to the therapeutic regimen in COPD patients.
To know the fundamental role of nursing with COPD patients.
METHODOLOGY: A literature review on COPD of protocols, clinical practice guidelines and articles with scientific evidence in different databases is performed.
RESULTS: COPD is an underdiagnosed disease in which nurses must actively search for possible new cases in patients with previous exposure to risk factors and with respiratory symptoms, and obstruction must be detected in post-bronchodilator spirometry.
The main treatment for COPD is smoking cessation, it is also important to establish changes in the patient’s lifestyle with adequate nutrition, regular physical activity adapted to the patient’s age and physical condition, thus making efforts to prevent the progression of the disease, alleviate its symptoms, improve the general state of health, and prevent and treat complications and exacerbations, thus reducing mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: The role of nurses is essential in the management of the COPD patient’s condition, both in the diagnosis and assessment of COPD, as well as in offering guidance, health education and support to people with the disease and their families.
