The tarsal tunnel is an osteofibrous structure located under the flexor retinaculum that contains the tendons of the posterior tibial muscle, long flexor of the fingers, long flexor of the big toe, posterior tibial artery, posterior tibial vein, and tibial nerve. Sometimes the tibial nerve undergoes peripheral compression at this level known as tarsal tunnel syndrome. The objective of this article is to quantify the possible variations in the dimensions of the tarsal tunnel and the tibial nerve with different ankle movements in healthy subjects. For this, an analytical, cross-sectional comparative study is carried out, analyzing a total of 8 healthy volunteers. Several images were taken with an ultrasound machine placing the ankle in a resting position and a combined position of plantar flexion and maximum inversion. In comparison with the carpal tunnel, few studies demonstrate the morphology and variations at the level of the tarsal tunnel. The present study shows that the position of plantar flexion and maximum ankle inversion produces a statistically significant increase in the anteroposterior diameter of the tarsal tunnel.
