Objective: to assess whether the genetic predisposition toward alcoholism is associated with cocaine abuse.
Material and methods: subjective responses and pharmacokinetic analysis following acute cocaine administration. Patients: one group of subjects with family history of alcoholism and another group of subjects without family history of alcoholism.
Results: no differences between groups were observed in the subjective effects. Differences between groups were observed in pharmacokinetics of cocaine.
Conclusions: the mechanisms of vulnerability to alcohol abuse seem to be different from those involved in cocaine abuse.
