According to this study:
* Many hospitals experience what's known as a “weekend effect”: poorer perioperative outcomes on the weekend than on weekdays. It is thought to be caused by differences in staffing and resources on the weekend.
* A study in a population of patients undergoing urgent or emergent general surgery suggests that the use of electronic medical records, home health and pain management programs, inpatient rehabilitation, and a greater proportion of RNs can help hospitals overcome a weekend effect.
