* Avelox, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is now approved to treat pneumonic and septicemic plague (although not bubonic plague).
* Cases of plague occur yearly in the western United States. Globally, plague may occur in many areas, but most cases are in rural Africa. Plague should be suspected in symptomatic patients who traveled to any of these areas recently shortly before they became ill.
