OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between athletes’ region of birth and the region they represent among elite Paralympic athletics athletes selected for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.METHODS: This is a documentary study with a quali-quantitative approach, using as the corpus of analysis the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Press Guide and the Brazilian National Athletics Ranking, involving 65 athletes.RESULTS: Most athletes were born in the Southeast region (29), followed by the Northeast region (16), North (8), South (7), and Midwest (5). There is a dissociation between place of birth and the athletes' sporting representation, particularly among athletes from the Northeast, and a lack of representation of athletes born in the North by institutions in their region.CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the asymmetries between place of birth and institutional affiliation arise from the insufficiency of public policies aimed at promoting parasport in the analyzed regions, which may contribute to the migration of young athletes to major training centers.
