El artículo analiza críticamente el modelo de meaning making de Crystal L. Park aplicado al duelo, proponiendo su ampliación desde una perspectiva construccionista y fenomenológica. Aunque dicho modelo constituye un avance al desplazar el foco desde la sintomatología hacia la reconstrucción del significado, mantiene supuestos problemáticos como el ideal de coherencia adaptativa y un enfoque predominantemente intrapsíquico. A partir de la sociología del duelo de Tony Walter, se argumenta que el significado está socialmente normado y regulado por expectativas culturales sobre la duración e intensidad del sufrimiento. Asimismo, desde la fenomenología poética de Gaston Bachelard, el duelo se interpreta como acontecimiento ontológico y creación imaginativa del ser, más allá de una simple reestructuración cognitiva. Se concluye que el duelo debe entenderse como crisis de sentido, proceso social y transformación ontológica, superando la lógica meramente adaptativa.
This article offers a critical analysis of the meaning-making model proposed by Crystal L. Park in the context of grief, arguing for its theoretical expansion through constructionist sociology and phenomenology. Although the model represents an important shift from symptom-focused approaches toward the reconstruction of meaning, it retains problematic assumptions such as the ideal of cognitive coherence and an individualistic framework. Drawing on Tony Walter’s sociology of grief, the paper emphasizes that meaning is socially regulated by cultural norms that define appropriate duration and intensity of mourning. Furthermore, inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s poetic phenomenology, grief is interpreted as an ontological event and creative transformation of being rather than mere cognitive adjustment. The study concludes that grief should be understood as a crisis of meaning, a socially constructed process, and an ontological transformation that exceeds purely adaptive logic.
