The biographical milestones of Emilio Chillida (1850–1944) as a practitioner and member of the Red Cross are documented through a descriptive and interpretative study of primary sources. Chillida was a practitioner between 1870 and 1889 but continued to serve in the Álava Red Cross, where he was a member from 1874 until the end of his life, participating in its most important operations, including during the 1918 flu epidemic. He was awarded the Grand Medal of Honour and Merit of the Red Cross and the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Charity, 1st Class. A self-made businessman who ventured into provincial politics, he maintained contact with practitioners throughout his life, joining the association at the age of 80 in support of its re-founding in 1930. Inevitably, being a practitioner and a member of the Red Cross complement and help to explain his well-known biography as a businessman and politician.
