La ostomía se define como la apertura de un orificio o estoma a la pared abdominal, conectando así el tubo digestivo con el exterior. Se dividen en ileostomías y colostomías dependiendo de a qué nivel del tubo digestivo esté el estoma, y en ambos casos podrán ser temporales o permanentes. Los cuidados en ambos tipos de ostomías presentan similitudes aunque difiere la causa que llevó a generar cada uno. Es importante educar al paciente para que sea autónomo en los cuidados de su ostomía, a nivel de alimentación, higiene y sepa identificar posibles complicaciones y prevenirlas.
Ostomy is defined as the opening of an orifice or stoma to the abdominal wall, thus connecting the digestive tract with the exterior. They are divided into ileostomies and colostomies depending on the level of the digestive tract at which the stoma is located, and in both cases they can be temporary or permanent. The care of both types of ostomies has similarities although the cause that led to generate each one differs. It is important to educate the patient to be autonomous in the care of his ostomy, at the level of feeding, hygiene and to know how to identify possible complications and prevent them.
