In this article, we will address the importance of understanding the proper use of mechanical restraints in psychiatric patients. Restraints are exceptional measures that should only be applied when all other therapeutic alternatives have been exhausted, and always with the goal of protecting the patient and those around them. It is essential to know when their use is justified, as well as to strictly comply with the established legal, ethical, and clinical requirements to ensure respect for the patient’s rights.
We will examine the situations in which their use is indicated, the criteria that must be met before applying a restraint, and the correct protocol for their implementation. Additionally, the importance of continuous monitoring of the patient while restrained will be highlighted, in order to minimize risks, assess their physical and emotional condition, and remove the restraint as soon as possible.
