Los grandes adelantos tecnológicos en materia de reproducción asistida, aunque acompañados de grandes dilemas bioéticos, han facilitado la comprensión de un área tan compleja como lo es la de la fertilidad y reproducción humana.
Ésta se ha constituido en una rama de la Salud Sexual y Reproductiva (SSR) en constante desarrollo y crecimiento, respecto de la cual la matronería tiene la oportunidad de participar y dar respuesta a las demandas de sus usuarios, puesto que a nivel mundial son cada vez más las parejas que enfrentan dificultades para la reproducción, así como hay quienes desean postergar su maternidad, con necesidades de preservación de su fertilidad por razones médicas, o familias diversas que requieren de servicios de fertilidad.
En este contexto, el presente artículo es una reflexión sobre los diferentes escenarios en los que la matronería podría actuar, en la primera línea de la atención de los problemas de salud sexual y reproductiva. Asimismo, esta realidad plantea un llamado a la academia a transformar las mallas curriculares de la escuelas de Obstetricia, para que se establezca el interesante rol profesional de la matronería en función de ejercer dentro de este campo.
The great technological advances in assisted reproduction, although accompanied by great bioethical dilemmas, have facilitated the understanding of an area as complex as human fertility and reproduction; becoming a branch of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in constant development and growth; where midwifery has an opportunity to participate and respond to the demands of these users, since worldwide there are more and more couples who face difficulties in reproduction, as well as a greater number of users who wish to postpone their motherhood, with fertility preservation needs for medical reasons, or diverse families requiring fertility services.
In this context, this article is a reflection on the different scenarios where midwifery could act, as front-line professionals in the care of sexual and reproductive health problems, to address the needs and problems associated with reproduction; likewise, it is a call from the academy for the transformation of the curricula of the Schools of MIdwifery, to establish the interesting professional role that midwives can play within this field.
