La neumonía es un tipo de infección respiratoria que afecta a los pulmones, cuyos alvéolos no pueden llenarse de aire por la presencia de pus y líquido que hace dolorosa la respiración y, en consecuencia, limita la absorción de oxígeno. Esta enfermedad es la principal causa de mortalidad infantil en el mundo, principalmente en niños menores de 5 años siendo su prevalencia en zonas de África subsahariana y Asia meridional1,2. El tratamiento suele basarse en antibióticos cuando la neumonía tiene origen bacteriano, pero la mejor forma de prevención ante esta enfermedad es la vacunación, además de una nutrición adecuada y el mantenimiento de factores ambientales saludables.
Pneumonia is a type of respiratory infection that affects the lungs, whose alveoli cannot fill with air due to the presence of pus and fluid that makes breathing painful and, consequently, limits the absorption of oxygen. This disease is the main cause of infant mortality in the world, mainly in children under 5 years of age, being most prevalent in areas of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Treatment is usually based on antibiotics when pneumonia is of bacterial origin, but the best way to prevent this disease is vaccination, in addition to adequate nutrition and maintaining healthy environmental factors.
