El impétigo es una infección bacteriana que afecta a la superficie de la piel (epidermis) y está causada por Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes o ambos, en la actualidad es una dolencia muy común que afecta principalmente a los bebes y niños menores de 5 años, su incidencia aumenta en lugares cuyo clima es húmedo y cálido. Esta infección es muy contagiosa y se transmite solo con tocar objetos contaminados que hayan sido manipulados previamente por personas infectadas.
Sus lesiones se caracterizan por ser costrosas, con ampollas, enrojecidas y causar mucho picor, pero su tratamiento es sencillo basta con aplicar pomada tópica o antibioterapia oral.
