El cáncer es la principal causa de morbimortalidad en España, y el cáncer de próstata representa el tipo más frecuente en hombres, con más de 30.000 casos diagnosticados anualmente. Aunque la detección precoz ha mejorado significativamente, los métodos tradicionales, como el tacto rectal, presentan limitaciones relacionadas con su subjetividad y falta de precisión, lo que subraya la necesidad de herramientas más objetivas y accesibles. En respuesta a este desafío, surge la iniciativa PROSTACTO, en la que se propone el desarrollo de un dispositivo innovador que permite el cribado del cáncer de próstata mediante la evaluación objetiva de la rigidez del tejido prostático con sensores avanzados y ultrasonidos, en un formato portátil y económico.
En esta iniciativa participan el Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV), el Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Fe (IIS La Fe), la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), el Instituto de Instrumentación para Imagen Molecular (I3M), el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) y el vehículo de inversión REDIT Ventures, con el apoyo financiero de la Agencia Valenciana de la Innovación (AVI), ahora IVACE+i. Este esfuerzo conjunto culminará en la comercialización del dispositivo por la startup RI MEDICAL.
Cancer is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in Spain, and prostate cancer is the most common in men, with more than 30,000 cases diagnosed each year. Although early detection has improved significantly, traditional methods, such as a rectal examination, have inherent limitations due to their subjectivity and lack of precision, highlighting the need for more objective and accessible tools. The PROSTACTO initiative addresses this challenge. This project involves the development of an innovative prostate cancer screening device based on an objective assessment of prostate tissue stiffness using state-of-the-art sensors and ultrasound, in a portable and economical format.
The participants in the initiative are the Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV), the La Fe Health Research Institute (IIS La Fe), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), the Institute of Instrumentation for Molecular Imaging (I3M), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the venture builder REDIT Ventures, with the financial support of the Valencian Agency for Innovation (AVI), now known as IVACE+i. The outcome of this joint effort will be the commercialisation of the device by the start-up company RI MEDICAL.
