Breastfeeding is a form of feeding that begins at birth.
Studies show that there are multiple benefits of this type of feeding for babies, and multiple advantages for the mother. The WHO recommends that babies should be fed exclusively on BF for the first six months of life, and then that it should be their main source of nourishment while introducing different foods according to their age until they are two years old. Protection and support for BF is a priority action. In Spain, the Initiative for the humanisation of birth and breastfeeding care (IHAN) promotes maternal and child health through the humanisation of birth care and the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. Interventions offered by health professionals in the hospital and out-of-hospital setting during the first days have a strong positive influence on the initiation and duration of breastfeeding.
